Literacy Week Events and Activities

Monday January 23^rd to Thursday, January 26^th, 2012

Daily Draw-We will have a ‘book character’ trivia challenge on Mon, Tues, and Wednesday as part of our morning announcements. Students will be invited to place their entries in a draw box on the library counter. Mr. Richey, Ms. T and Ms. Hazon will draw names each day. Students will win a small prize for the next book fair.

See What We Are Reading-All classes will receive a book cover template. Students will design the cover of one of their favorite books, a book they are currently reading or a book they would like to read. These will be used to create a recommendation book to help students when they are making book selections.

Staff Book Picks- See our ‘Guess the Teacher’ bulletin board.

Author Visits- We have author visits from Carol McDougall and Glen Lovett on Wednesday, January 25^th.

Warm Up With a Book - On Wednesday, January 25^th at 8:00 am students who would like to come to school early to spend some time reading are invited to our school library to ‘Warm up with a Book’. We will have hot chocolate, book displays, reading material and a short art activity.

Winter Assembly 2011

Our students will be featured in a Winter Assembly. All classes have been rehearsing songs with Mrs. Sanchez & Mrs. Kyle during their Performing Arts blocks in preparation for this winter assembly! We hope you will be able to join us for some festive entertainment. Each assembly is 45-60 minutes, approximately.

Families are welcome to attend either the assembly on Wednesday, December 14th or the dress rehearsal assembly on Tuesday, December 13th. Please note that the times are earlier for the dress rehearsals to make room for additional practice time. There will be classes watching during dress rehearsals.

DECEMBER SCHOOL PROJECTS

At Rogers, historically, many service learning projects are undertaken. In December, we have four key initiatives in place. The local and global service projects that are being learned about and done to support the goal are:

Food Hampers

Non-perishable food and toiletries will be collected in the front foyer in boxes and in bins. Food hampers will be made for local families in need as well as given to the local Mustard Seed. Dates: December 5^th to 16^th.

Care Packages

Care packages (bags) consisting of items brought in by students will be put together by classes and given to children in need in our community. Each class has a festive bag for a boy and a girl. Dates: November 28^th to December 2^nd.

Sending Care to Bolivia

Funds will be raised for students in a school in Cochabumba, Bolivia that we sponsor to purchase items for the students so they may have a better educational experience. For this project, we will be selling shortbread for $7 per dozen, where the profits will be donated, as well as selling “Take One Hand” mitten tree ornament gift vouchers. Shortbread will be ready for pick up on Tuesday, December 13^th. Also, the PAC will donate 50% of the proceeds from the Bottle Drive on January 7^th, 2012 to the school in Bolivia.

Bringing Toys and Electonics to School

A few years ago, a student brought and lost an iPod at Rogers. It was devastating for him to lose such an expensive device. It is for this reason that we ask that students do not bring toys, electronics or anything of value to school. It is at risk of getting lost, damaged or least likely but possibly taken.

We respectfully expect that students do not bring iPods, electronic Games, toys or gadgets to school. Thank you.

Inclement Weather

We are now approaching the season when inclement weather may affect the safety and welfare of students. In particular, snowy weather has the potential to cause school closure or some School District 61 services to be suspended.

During inclement weather, information about schools will be updated continuously on the Greater Victoria School District 61 website at http://www.sd61.bc.ca/.

Within the Greater Victoria School District, the Superintendent of Schools will provide media outlets with information about the status of our facilities and transportation services by 6:30 a.m.

Our school blog will also be updated for potential school closure due to weather.

Children’s Book Recycling Project Greater Victoria

Reading to Wee Ones Makes all The Difference!

A preschool child with books in the home has a much stronger chance for success in school. Would you miss 2 or 3 books for babies and preschoolers from your house - likely not. But there are many other children who would find these 3 books one of the best gifts. Thanks are pouring in from the families at Strong Start Centres who appreciate your ongoing giving. We have stories of children who are proud to show how they can read their very own book. So far, volunteers have gift bagged 8500 books that Victoria families have donated. Thanks for cleaning out some of your bookshelves and for continuing to give the gift of literacy to babies and preschoolers.

If you have a gently used book or two for children between the ages of infant to five years old, please drop them off in our PINK drop box located beside the Seaquarium in our front foyer. Thank you for helping to spread the love of reading to children!

The final Cross Country Meet for Fall 2011 is on Monday, October 24th from 1 pm to 3 pm at Beacon Hill Park! If you have not already picked up a map, you can get one from the front office. Parents will be expected to transport and supervise students. Please bring water for your child!

Go Rogers Go!!

Swim Club

Swim Club will be offered to all grades 3 to 5 students at Rogers. Swim Club members must have a minimum ability of swimming 50 meters and a comfort in deep water. Parents will be responsible to transport their own child to and from the Commonwealth Pool.

Swim Club will be on Fridays after school from 3:15 to 4:00 pm from October 28th until March. There will be a cost involved. Students do not have to make a commitment until they have completed the first class on Friday October 28th: $49.50.

Swim Club forms can be picked up on Wednesday, October 19th at recess on the stairs in front of the gym or at the front office. Forms and payment should be returned to the office by Friday, October 28th. Thanks to our parent volunteer, Kimberly Christison, for organizing the Swim Club at Rogers! Thanks to all of the parents who are dropping children off at the bottom of the hill so they can walk up to the school. It helps to lessen the traffic congestion at the school and it reduces the car exhaust that our walkers breathe in.

For those parents who prefer to drop off children at the school, please note that the circle is for DROP OFF ONLY, not parking. If you do drop off, for the moments it takes to drop off your child, please shut off your engine to lessen the emissions for our walking students and parents.

Above all, STUDENT SAFETY is #1, so please drive slowly and be cautious of our students getting in and out of cars and walking.

Waste Reduction Week

Rogers has had a Green Friendly environment for many years. Every year we get a little bit greener by doing more great things to help the earth to be healthy and not polluted. Our goal is to reduce waste materials in our school with the intent to have nothing in our garbage cans to help reduce our carbon footprint. We are pleased to announce that we are already doing well, and now have additional waste reduction plans.

What Do We Already Do?
Encorp recycling: recycle tetra-packs, bottles, juice boxes, milk cartons, pop cans
Paper recycling: cardboard boxes in all classrooms
Paper towel only bins: cardboard bins x each class
Food waste organic bins: beige plastics containers x each class
Yogurt containers: into the classroom recycle box ( large blue bins )
Mixed container bin: used for #1to #7 plastic

CHALLENGE YEAR #2: Mini-Garbage Can Challenge!
The Student Leadership Team at Rogers would like to challenge all classes to use a mini garbage can during Waste Reduction Week (and beyond)! Student Leaders will be distributing a mini garbage can to each division next week. We hope classes will continue to use these on a regular basis!

CHALLENGE: Litterless Lunch Challenge!
The Student Leadership Team would like to challenge all staff and students to bring a litterless (waste-free) lunch to school every day next week (October 17th to 20th). The Student Leadership Team will be visiting classrooms at lunch time to encourage everyone to bring all food items in containers.

There will be a soccer practice on two dates this upcoming week. All students who have signed up must show up for both practices to be prepared for the soccer jamboree. Please wear running shoes. iWalk to School: October 5th, 2011

On Wednesday, October 5th, 2011 it's International iWalk to School Day! We encourage everyone at Rogers to walk to school!!

At Rogers we will be taking a tally to see how many students walked to school, so parents please help make this happen!! If you live too far from the school to walk, then you could walk from the bottom of Rogers Avenue!! The survey results from every class will be displayed on the front bulletin board on Wednesday morning.

Your Principal, Ms. T has a 25 minute morning commute into work every day, but she will park her car in a local parking lot and walk to work on Wednesday as a challenge to all Rogers staff and students.

It will be School Spirit Day. We encourage all students to wear our school colours of YELLOW and GREEN!

All classes will meet in the gym at 1:45 am for a brief assembly to honour and remember Terry Fox, followed by taking part in the National Terry Fox Run. We will run for 15 to 20 minutes around the Rogers school field.

Please send in a toonie for our Toonies for Terry collection all week! All proceeds go to the National Terry Fox Cancer Research Fund.

Once we are finished our run, we will all meet in front of the new primary playground to have a ribbon cutting to formally acknowledge the new playground!

Thanks to the PAC for fundraising for 2 years and for all parents who contributed to the fundraising that led to the purchase of this beautiful new play structure.

A Paris theme decor adorned Studio One, created and organized by Jacquelin Green, with support from so many of the Rogers families who generously sent in delicious food, along with punch, dainties and a cake! Thanks to the moms who came out to do supervision for the staff over lunch: Alison Hoogland, Jocie Irish, Tracey Bremner, Erin Pearson, Raeanne Hutchison, Erin Parsons and Marylou Ballinger!

Alternative Transporation Day: Friday, June 10, 2011

As part of a class project in Mr. Nast's grade 5 class, Evan and Matt have created an Action Plan on Air Pollution Awareness. Then have put up signs around the school, spoken to classes, talked to parents at the Parent Breakfast and they did an announcement at morning announcements. They are promoting an Alternative Transporation Day to help reduce air pollution at Rogers.

On Friday, June 10th, they would like to encourage all staff and students to not drive to school, but instead to run, walk or ride their bikes, scooters, skateboards or rollerblade to school.

Please help to reduce the carbon footprint at Rogers!!

Garden Club

Our Garden Club has met after school from 3-4 pm every Thursday in May. Over 40 students have learned about and been involved in gardening the nine plant beds at the school. This year our garden beds have been vandalized three times. It is disheartening for the teachers and the students involved in the garden club. The police have been called on each occasion. If you have any information about the vandalism, please contact the school.

The garden club will have their luncheon meeting on Thursday, June 2nd.

Zone Track Meet: Friday, May 27th

The Zone Track Meet is on Friday, May 27th. Two buses will be leaving Rogers at 9:40 am to go to the Centennial Stadium at the University of Victoria. The meet starts at 10:30 am and is estimated to go until 1:30 pm.

The meet starts with the 800 metre runners, girls and then boys, youngest to oldest. Next is the 100 metre races, starting with girls, youngest to oldest and then boys, youngest to oldest. The meet ends with the relays.

Parents are invited to attend. We are unable to predict exact times for races, but the sequence should give parents an idea of when each child will participate. Students should bring lunch, extra snacks, water, sunscreen/umbrella and suitable clothing for the day's weather! To see the weather forecast for Friday, check out the Environment Canada website!

See you at the stadium! (Pay parking is available but often limited. Give yourself plenty of time to park and wait in a line up for a parking pass.)

World Partnership Walk

Some of our students and their families are participating in the World Partnership Walk on Sunday May 29th at 11 am at the Beacon Hill Park (Cameron Bandshell). All students, teachers and their families (and pets) are invited to participate in the Walk this coming Sunday, May 29th at 11:00 am.

Registration is free, and we ALWAYS have a great time! There will be tents where we can play games, mini golf, learn about the projects we support, have lunch and enjoy entertainment by the Vic High Band! Registration begins at 10 am, with the Walk program commencing at 11 am.

The Walk is Canada’s largest annual event dedicated to increasing awareness and raising funds to fight global poverty.

By participating in the Walk, you will have a lasting impact on the quality of life in impoverished communities in Asia and Africa.

The Walk is an initiative of Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC) and its national network of volunteers, which supports programs in health, education and rural development, as well as supporting community-based organizations in Asia and Africa. Division 10, Mrs. Paddi Ross's grade 3 class will have a meaningful project with art, writing and mind maps on display at the event, featuring the world partnership study they did on Afghanistan.

Kindergarten Orientation

The 2011-2012 kindergarten students came to Rogers today to take part in three kindergarten orientation sessions. The students took part in singing, listening to a story and exploring letters in their name. It was a great chance for the students to meet the teachers and for the parents to meet our PAC parents. It was the first day of a 13-year school journey!

Former Rogers Elementary School parent, Julie Kewley, was presented with an award for all of the Green Initiatives that she spearheaded at Rogers over the last four years. She was one of four people in our District who received this honorable award during the School Board Meeting on May 16, 2011.

Bottle Drive Success

The PAC raised $1257.55 at the Bottle Drive on Saturday, May 14th. Early birds were out at 8:15 am to set up and stayed until 2:30 pm. It was a treat to share lunch in the staffroom at noon with all of the families, parents and children who volunteers.
Thanks to all of the volunteers and to our coordinator, Erin Parsons, our advertise Sandy Jaques and dedicated PAC President, Alison Hoogland!

Performance Assembly

Our Performance Assembly is on Thursday, May 26th in the afternoon. This is a chance for students to showcase their talents! The last audition opportunity is on Monday, May 16th. Students at Rogers jumped rope all day on Friday, May 6th for Jump Rope for Heart. Mrs. Kivell organized a variety of skipping stations in the gym where classes skipped to upbeat music for 15 minutes. Once the class was finished skipping each student put a ticket in the prize bin and enjoyed a freezie. Thanks to PAC for supplying the freezies and thanks to Evelyn for supplying the prizes from ACTNow BC. We will be collecting twoonies all week, in our Twoonies for Your Ticker promotion, where proceeds will be given to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.

Salmon Project at Rogers

It started at the end of March, with 198 eggs. With careful care of keeping the aquarium the proper temperature and amount of light, once these baby salmon reach the 'fry' stage, they will be between 5-7 cm in length. In mid-May, Ms. Winstone's grade 4 class will take these swimmers to Goldstream Park to release them into their river habitat. Thanks to Dillon for the photos and information for this blog insert.

During the month of April and May, we have 11 students teachers from local university Faculty Of Education programs at Rogers Elementary School. Student teachers come to observe and have some time in classrooms teaching lessons. They learn from us and we learn from them!

Sushi Lunch

On Monday, May 2, the PAC is sponsoring a Sushi Lunch Day. Sushi can be pre-ordered. Costs will be $3 for 6 vegetable rolls, or $4 for 6 California rolls. All sushi will be made on site at Fujiya's Japanese food store. All proceeds will go to the Red Cross for Japanese relief efforts.

Support Japan: Origami & Bookmarks

Origami swans and stars made by Division 16 will be available at the Spring Concert by donation. The lovely laminated bookmarks will be available at the Book Fair and the Sprng Concert for a suggested $2 donation.

Fundraising for Japan Tsunami Relief

Rogers always finds a way to help others. We have three Japan fundraising efforts to advertise:

1. Students from Division 16 will have origami figures at the Spring Concert on April 20th to be sold for donations. All proceeds will go towards the relief efforts in Japan. The week following the Spring Concert will be a Japan fundraising week. The grade 5 students from division 16 will be going from class to class to sell the origami for donations.

2. Mrs. Shortt's kindergarten class and Mrs. Gauk's grade 2 class are passing around a donation jar to collect coins. These coins will be traveling to Japan on April 18th to go to the Red Cross. The coin jar will be circulated for the next week at Rogers. Thanks to Hiromi for raising awareness about Japan with our students.

3. Support Japan 2011 has two eventsgoing on to raise funds for the Japanese Red Cross. See the PAC blog for detailed information about these two events on April 9th and April 16th: http://rogerspac.blogspot.com/

4. On May 2nd, the PAC will be having a Sushi Lunch. Students can pre-order the sushi. Profits go to the Japanese Red Cross.

A Strategy For Choosing Books That Are Just Right

A good way for students to get a quick idea whether or not a book is about right for their independent reading level is to use the “Five Finger Rule”.

Five Finger Rule

(a.k.a. Rule of Thumb)

1. Choose a book.

2. Open it anywhere.

3. Make a fist.

4. Start to read the page.

5. Put up a finger for each hard word.

1 finger too easy, try another book 2-3 fingers just right, try another page to be sure 4-5 fingers too hard.

We have started our Spring Cross Country Program at Rogers School. Students in grade 3, 4 and 5 are welcome to participate.

Practice Schedule: Tuesday and Thursday and Friday at lunch recess ~Athletes meet on the outdoor basketball blacktop wearing proper running attire and appropriate shoes ~We ask that students attend a minimum of TWO days each week to reach optimal fitness.

Meets: All meets are held afterschool at the following locations:

Monday, April 18, 3:30 – Lambrick Park
Monday, May 2, 3:30 – Lambrick Park

This year, the April 22nd Earth Day fall on the same day as Good Friday. Because school is not on session, we will recognize Earth Day on Thursday, April 21st. For Earth Day spirit at Rogers, we ask that all students wear GREEN to recognize planet earth.
